Professional Doulas of Charleston public statement, Tuesday, March 17, 2020:
Focusing on the health and safety of our doulas, their clients, and their families is our number one priority. We do not anticipate much disruption in our doulas providing support to their clients at this time.
PDC is encouraging additional safety measures for our doulas. As we learn more about the spread of COVID-19, PDC will make any necessary adjustments to our recommendations. We feel it is important that we support the health department recommendations to practice social distancing in order to limit community spread of this virus.
With that in mind, the following policies will go into place, effective immediately:
• Doulas accompanying clients into hospital settings are asked to wash and disinfect hands upon entering and leaving hospital room.
• If the clients or another member of their household is ill, PDC ask that they notify their doula ahead of time. Our doulas will work together with their clients to determine the best course of action.
• If a doula should become ill, they must be fever free for 48 hours prior to making contact with clients. (Virtual or back up doula services will be employed, if desired)
• Before entering a client’s home, doula’s will ask a series of questions about recent travel and exposure to the virus for anyone in their client’s home.
• Our doulas have been instructed to take precautionary measures to mitigate their and their clients exposure to limit the risk of infection. Some of those precautions include:
▪️Frequent hand washing and use of disinfectant
▪️Avoiding touching mouth, nose, and eyes
▪️Keeping a safe distance from anyone self-quarantined or ill
▪️Staying home if they are ill
On behalf of PDC and our doulas who live and work in the Charleston community, our thoughts are with all those who are being impacted.
